One tends to disregard evidence against their faction when one commits themselves to a particular sect.
On Election Day in 2020, Donald Trump lost in the Electoral College, and therefore, lost the presidency. Instead of peacefully transitioning power to then-president-elect Joe Biden, he caused an insurrection that following January. Now, ask someone who voted for Trump: “What are your thoughts on Jan. 6?” and their response would have to neglect major evidence about the situation to support Trump.
I’m not saying people are wrong for voting for Donald Trump–certainly with more than 50% of the popular vote (which no candidate from his party has won since George W. Bush) it looks like I was wrong–what I am saying, though, is that Donald Trump is a huge pill to swallow for most people. With all of his lies, bad takes, and bad decisions (and I’m not talking about just politics), to his crimes and rumored affairs, I almost feel bad for people who have voted for Trump, and who don’t idolize the person, but, rather, agree with the Republican policies he promises to set into action. The hardest part of voting for Trump is setting apart the person from the policies.
This is how Kamala Harris had a path to the White House in the first place. She had almost zero hot takes, and a centrist view on policies which made her more desirable (if not a tiny bit boring) to people who didn’t idolize Trump. Her mission statement was effectively: “Even if you disagree with me on some things, I bet you know it’s better than voting for Trump.” A lot of people subscribed to that statement.
I put the thematic statement at the top of this article to illustrate a major point: Trump supporters will stop at nothing to keep their views of the president-elect in good shape. No one can convince them Trump is a bad pick.
The culmination of what seems like the longest election cycle ever is that Republicans have taken the Senate, the Presidency, and most control over the Supreme Court. We’ll just have to wait and see for the House results. Clearly there was enough demand to push democrats off of the helm, and I acknowledge and respect that. America is the home of the brash, outrageous, and free. That’s what makes our country special. I just hope we weren’t a little too brash.
